Application Compatibility Manager (ACM)
Application Compatibility Manager (ACM) simplifies the process of testing large volumes of applications for compatibility with Windows operating systems.
Aimed at business users analyzing large numbers of applications for compatibility, users will find ACM not only analyses applications quickly and efficiently, but provides a level of detail that is of particular value for making the decision to migrate or upgrade.
Using ACM reduces the amount of testing needed for applications and provides detailed information that can be used as the basis for the overall testing plan for Windows XP, XP Service Pack 2 and now Windows Vista.
Methodology
ACM tool analyses .MSI files and associated binaries to create report meta data
ACM analyses MSI data for install-time issues and binary executables for potential run-time issues
XML and text-based ACM report data is posted to the ACM server for analysis against the ACM Vista rules (no application binary data is transferred to the server)
Report data is immediately available for analysis online as well as downloading in PDF and Excel formats
Applications can be managed and updated from within the web UI
The ACM Report
The report overview is categorised in columns by the types of issues identified. Each application is classified as RED, AMBER or GREEN giving rise to a 'RAG' status. This view is useful in quickly discovering the overall compatibility profile and this is summarised in percentage terms at the top of the report. This data can be viewed online or downloaded in PDF or Excel formats.
In addition to the summary view, a detailed view of discovered issues is linked to each application. This data can be used in the mitigation phase as a guide to the causes of failure enabling developers to quickly remediate the issues.
